More about the Residency


The residency offers each artist a private studio space throughout the duration of the program, and a stipend of $37,500 paid out over the course of the residency.


Artists are required to engage with their studio practice for twenty hours per week at a minimum.  A selection of artworks made by the artists throughout the course of the residency will be featured in a culminating exhibition.  


Over the course of the residency program, artists are required to participate in the Museum’s annual Open Studios, a number of public programs and educational studio visits, and a rigorous engagement with the Museum's Curatorial Department and other Museum departments.  


Artists cannot be in school or committed to another residency while in the Studio Museum Artist-in-Residence program. 


Artists should apply to the residency with the understanding that they may be asked to work remotely. As the Museum remains committed to the health and safety of the artists in residence and staff, the Museum reserves the right to establish a remote residency, if necessary, at any point throughout the residency period. 


Artists should be prepared to follow appropriate COVID-19 safety regulations in accordance with CDC guidelines.

How to Apply


Applicants to the Artist-in-Residence program are required to submit a resume or CV, up to ten but no fewer than five images or videos of examples of artworks, and an artist statement; letters of recommendation are encouraged but not required.

The Museum accepts applications from artists practicing in all media. Applicants should apply with completed work samples, not proposed works.

The Studio Museum in Harlem offers an eleven-month studio residency for three emerging artists working in any media. The program is designed to serve emerging artists of African and/or Afro-Latinx descent working locally, nationally, or internationally. 
The residency is eleven months long, beginning October 16, 2023, and ending September 27, 2024.
The residency offers each artist a private studio space throughout the duration of the program and will be in person for the upcoming year contingent on COVID-19 safety protocols. The Museum encourages artists to apply with the understanding that they may be asked to work remotely at any point throughout the residency period.
We cannot accept applications after the due date.
There is no fee to apply to the Artist-in-Residence program.
Yes, the program accepts applications from artists working locally, nationally, or internationally. Please note, however, that the Museum cannot provide visas, nor can it sponsor international applicants. All international artists in the residency program must secure their own visas prior to their arrival.
Applicants are required to submit a resume or CV, up to ten but no fewer than five images or videos of examples of artwork, and an artist statement. The resume and artist statement should be consolidated into a single PDF file and uploaded, or written directly into the application portal.
The Museum receives hundreds of applications per year and, as a result, is unable to provide individual feedback.

Yes, the Museum asks that all artists submit their applications in English.
Members of the Museum’s curatorial team and a selection of external jurors will review applications.
In an effort to streamline the application review process, all recommendations must be submitted through the SlideRoom reference portal. Artist applicants can send, resend, or edit incomplete reference requests through their SlideRoom account. Once this is done, their references will receive an email from SlideRoom with instructions on how to submit their recommendation letter through the portal. 
The Museum encourages applicants to provide two written recommendations. However, recommendations are not required to submit your application. Applicants who choose to include recommendations should request letters from individuals who can speak knowledgeably about their recent work and artistic development. As a courtesy to recommenders, the Museum advises applicants to reach out to recommenders before adding them into SlideRoom. 
No, the application and letters of recommendation (should you choose to include them) must be completed and submitted online via SlideRoom. Paper material sent directly to the Museum will not be reviewed and will result in an incomplete application.
